Charles Russell

Charles Russell

As an experienced “roll your sleeves up” Manager based in South Devon, I can provide expertise in all areas of the hospitality industry. After twenty-five years of industry experience working in restaurants, corporate and family owned hotels and food retail, I can bring skills to your business offering you the support you need.

Starting in the ranks as a Kitchen Porter and working my way through the industry, my last full time position was 9 years as Director/ General Manager at The Edgemoor Hotel, Bovey Tracey.

We all wish there were more than twenty-four hours in a day as we don’t always have time for those all important tasks, so with expertise in developing systems and having your business vision in mind, those all important tasks will be achieved.

I have a passion for great customer service and am a firm believer of “people buy people” as this is so important in the hospitality industry. I have a can-do attitude, enjoy a new challenge and like nothing better than seeing someone else’s vision succeed as I understand the dedication and commitment that goes into businesses to make them thrive.

As an experienced administrator based in South Devon, I can implement and manage operational and administration systems within the hospitality industry. Systems in any business are the backbone to the day to day running of the organisation.

Completing a Hospitality and Business degree at Plymouth University and working within the hospitality industry for 12 years, has given me an insight into many hospitality businesses and systems. This has made me realise the importance of systems and how they can make work life far easier to manage and also have the ability to assess past business when forecasting for future business.

I am married to Charles and also look after our two children Isabelle and William.

I started my career as a trainee chef in France where I completed a 3 year apprenticeship.  After working in a UK kitchen for 4 years I decided to complete a Bachelor of science degree in tourism and hospitality management at Plymouth University. Since then I have worked my way into various management roles within hotels and restaurants working at hotels and restaurants within South Devon.

Working as a hotel manager I have realised that there are many ways to overcome some of the challenges now facing the industry and the importance of building a strong and dynamic team to working along side. I enjoy taking on new challenges and seeing a business grow and succeed beyond what anyone thought it would. I have a huge passion for the industry and always aiming to exceed customer expectations.

I am a “hands on” Freelance Accountant with a vast experience of accounting, bookkeeping, and business management, across a broad range of small and medium sized organisations, and specifically within the Hotel and Hospitality industry.

I was Management Accountant for the Dart Marina Hotel for six years (between 2002 and 2008) and since 2009, have held a similar position at The Edgemoor Hotel, and since 2014 Dartmoor Whisky Distillery

In my view, the accounting function of a business should realise two purposes.
The first is the creation, and application of an accounting and bookkeeping system to provide accurate records, ensuring suppliers, and staff are paid, correctly, and on time; that sales are recorded, in detail, and correctly; and that bank transactions are posted in an accurate, and timely fashion, in order to provide 24/7 visibility of the cash position.

The second purpose is, to use the accounting records, to generate Management Information (through Management Accounts, Key Performance Indicators, and budgeting), which will enable the business managers to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their business, and implement the necessary changes.

Originally I trained at Chelsea School of Art, London and have many years of experience “we won’t say how many” under my belt. Having worked on many design and refurbishment projects from London to the South West, I bring a wealth of experience to any re-design or makeover project. Living in London and visiting Devon on many occasions throughout the year to escape the big smoke!

I enjoy projects of all sizes, either major refurbishment or just that quick fix to make the difference.

We can offer support in all areas of your business to help improve efficiencies, profits, planning and much more so you get the most out of your business.
